OLD RIVS ASSOCIATION

There are few former pupil associations in the country with a longer continuous history than the Old Rivingtonians Association. It was founded in 1904 and has a membership in excess of 200 which embraces pupils from both the former grammar school and the High School.

 

Its aims are to:

 

• perpetuate the memory of what was, and is, a remarkable school

• foster continued and new friendships among former pupils

• support the aims and welfare of the school

• support local charities

 

The main events of the year are an Annual Reunion Weekend comprising a dinner dance on the Friday or Saturday evening and a Service in the School Chapel on the Sunday.

 

In addition to enjoying a wide range of reunion and social activities, the Association is keen to ensure that others less fortunate benefit from their gatherings, and have a long and proud history of raising funds for local worthy causes. Since the inception of the current President’s Charity Fund, substantial donations have been distributed to a diverse range of local and regional charities. The accumulated total raised to date is well in excess of £75,000.

 

In recent years two new stained glass windows have been commissioned and installed in the school chapel, in memory of a former Headmaster and the Association itself. Only recently, a dementia charity benefited from a new book called 'Rivington Reflections' which shares nostalgic photographs of Rivington and Blackrod High School (the Former President of the Old Rivingtonians, David Stokes is the man behind the collection of some 600 images of school life over half a century from the 1920s to the 1970s).
